Encouraging Words

This was sent to me via e-mail and I checked it out on Snopes to make sure it is true.  Enjoy.

This article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title "Cîntarea Americii" on September 24 in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentul zilei ("The Daily Event" or "News of the Day").

As Associated Press reported about Mr. Nistorescu:

Nistorescu, managing director of the daily newspaper Evenimentul Zilei — News of the Day — published his editorial Sept 24, two days after watching a celebrity telethon in New York for victims of the attacks . . .

Like his other columns, "Ode to America" was meant for domestic consumption. No one knows when — or how — the article first reached the other side of the Atlantic. But Nistorescu figures it began when someone pulled it off the English-language version of his daily’s Web page and sent it to a friend.

Since then, thousands of Americans at home and expats around the world have e-mailed it to friends, saying it captured their nation’s spirit. It has been read out to U.S. soldiers and on radio talk shows and posted on U.S. Web sites.

Nistorescu says he had no idea his "Ode to America" would resonate so far away . . .

Nistorescu remains surprised and touched by the success of the piece, one of thousands he has penned in a more than 20-year career.

"It is all about the American spirit and how freedom cannot be crushed," he says.

"The Daily Event" or "News of the Day".

                             ~An Ode to America~

Why are Americans so united?

They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color!  They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs.

Still, the American tragedy  turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart.

Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, or the secret service that they are only a bunch of losers.

Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts.

Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about.

Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand.

After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag.

They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing.

On every occasion, they started singing:"God Bless America!"

I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being?  ;  Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes.

And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy.
What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way?

Their land?  Their history?  Their economic Power?  Money?

I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace, I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion… Only freedom can work such miracles.

  1. Hello Gail,
This is a great post. It deserves to be spread around. Only in the United States can such measures of willingness to give and join together as one can be found.
Another definition I was given was that I am an alien soul searching for others with a like mind set. I still don’t know. Granted there are times I do feel like an alien in this world. It would be nice to know someone who has been through what I have. Alas, that is not to be. Too many years burying myself in others and work and denying my feelings and needs. I didn’t have time for them and have yet to loosen up enough. Life goes on. Maybe I should use the nickname the student pilots gave me when I was teaching "Hammer."
    Peace & Blessings.

  2. It’s all about the God who upholds us.  If it weren’t for a country established specifically for the purpose of a place of refuge for the world’s persecuted Christians to flee to, this country would be nothing special.  It’s the God who upholds her – in spite of the fact that she is really nothing more than an ignorant, rebellious teenager thumbing her nose at God, threatening to take Him out of her pledge of allegience, etc.  And why does God uphold American in her fit or teenage rage?
Because there’s always some mama or papa in a closet somewhere on his or her knees crying out for mercy – and God hears.

  3. Hi Gail,
This is very good, haven’t seen it before. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I agree with Carol, in her comment, it is God who takes care of us and pulls us together. But I’m afraid if we keep going the direction we’re going, that as there are fewer and fewer of those mamma’s and poppa’s praying, that if we keep pushing HIM out of the United States, that HE will just let happen to us, what we deserve to happen to us. Our whole way of life, our country was founded on God’s Word and now we’re letting them remove it from everything that is important to us. I feel it is only a matter of time before they start working on our independant freedom to be a Christian, we will have to underground to be a Christian. Personaly, I had rather they kill me now.
Great post, may God bless you.
