This and That

As Nooner pointed out, this is the one year anniversary of my last cigarette.  Hoo-ah!  I have gained alot of weight and it is very hard to lose.  However, when I was still smoking, I wouldn’t go up or down the stairs until a half hour after my last cigarette!  It was that bad (although my pulmonary function test at the doctor wasn’t half bad!).
Did you know that 50% of the U.S. population and 90% of American women are said to be on diets at any given time?
My area of the Atlantic northeast is preparing for our first snow storm of the season.  The forecast keeps changing so we will either have all rain, snow turning into rain or snow turning into freezing rain before turning back into snow again.  I guess we will just have to see tomorrow night and Wednesday!
Each year, 70% of the U.S supply of antibiotics ends up in animal feed.  Can you say, "Ewww?!"
I am looking for a good recipe for Mahi Mahi (a type of fish also known as Dolphin fish).  The last recipe I used wasn’t a winner and I still have some frozen.  Have any ideas?
In Colonial America, six-foot lobsters were caught near what is now New York City, flocks of birds darkened the sky for hours at a time and five-foot codfish inhabited the waters off Maine.
When my dd was pregnant with Isabella, I knew that I didn’t want to be called Grandma.  There is nothing wrong with that moniker.  I am just the type of person who likes something different.  As my ethnic heritage includes Italian and Spanish, I thought of Nonna and Ita (short for Abuelita or little Grandma).  Figuring that one of a child’s first words is, "No!" I chose Nonna.  My dd told me that Bells has been known to say , "Na, na, na," but I am not convinced that she is not thinking of the song that follows those syllables with, "hey, hey, hey, good-bye!"  It will be coming any day, eh?  After all, she is a genius, right?
On a typical 16th century English warship, a sailor’s weekly ration of beer was about eight gallons, or roughly ten pints per day.  Shoot!  I’m under the table after one and a half beers!
Here’s hoping that you all have a great week.  The trivia is courtesy of Gourmet magazine.
Be well, gail

  1. Hi Gail, congratulations on your first anniversary without a cigarette.  I have been through it myself.  I tried so many times,  but 15 years ago, I just woke up and said this is the day, and I think the Lord was talking to me because 6 months after at age 47, I was having a heart attack.  So I was grateful for listening to that little voice telling me to stop, maybe that saved my life.  God bless you Gail, Pauline

  2. Congratulations on making it one year without.  The weight will eventually come off, but you must feel considerably better.  At least that’s what they say.I will never know because I was one of those few that never smoked.  Lucky me.Well, I’m not going to write too much because I am fighting a little cold and a little cold can be quite devastating to me.  So, I’m going to cut this short and just wish you a happy Monday.  If that’s actually possible.Billy

  3. Congrats Gail on no more cigs for one year.
LAMS will be next to give up smoking?
Diet…That is bad four letter word.
We just need to live healthy lifestyle.
I know easier said then done but we can all do it together.
Have a week full of extra love, Greg

  4. Hi Gail,  Thanks for your positive comments on my blog.  Stats is not so hard after all.  It’s good I just have one class to concentrate on instead of when I was an undergrad and was taking 4 or more at a time.  I’m celebrating a snow day at home and maybe just maybe I’ll work on some more Stats homework.  Anyway we may not have class tomorrow night if the weather continues as forecasted.  Hey the Mahi Mahi sounds really good.  Sorry I do not have any recipes for mahi mahi.  I ate a lot of it in my 7 years in Hawaii.  Loved it.  Congratulations on your one year anniversary without a cigarette!  There are a few at work who are taking a new medication to help them quit.  I’m not sure what it’s called but so far so good.  It’s working.  Well enjoy your snow and stay warm!

  5. A whole year!!!  That’s AWESOME!!!  Congratulations!!!  It will be 13 years for me since some time in early April.
You guys haven’t had a snowstorm yet???  Wow, I had just assumed that you guys had been deluged along with the other parts of the country buried in snow before now!
Okay, looking forward to hearing all about it the first time Bells belts out the long-awaited, much-coveted moniker!
    No comment on the beer.
    Love ya!
    Carol 🙂

  6. Good luck with the recipe! I don’t like any kind of fish. Well, I occasionally eat tuna salad. I put apples in it and that helps with the fishy flavor. lol
Congrats on a whole year! That is awesome stuff. 🙂
Well… I would not wear that bathing suit in my present condition. I know people who look much worse wear 2 pcs all the time and that’s fine if they are comfortable with it but I’m not comfortable with wearing one myself unless my stomach is in better shape than it’s in now. I’m sure I’ll be ready by summer. lol I hope so anyway!

  7. Thanks for the well wishes Gail.  I am feeling better today than I was yesterday, so I guess the rest of relaxation, in combination with more fluids and some minor over the counter medications did help out.
In case I don’t get by here tomorrow, I want to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.Billy

  8. congrats on quitting smoking!!! 🙂
it is not easy to stay off it…
    but you did it!!!
you are truly protecting your health for many more years to come.
yes… there is finally rain in Australia…
but we are still quite dry 😦
but I am currently in quite a "green" part of the country now…
so it is nice to see green around me instead of dry brown landscapes.. 🙂

  9. Congrats on quitting smoking!  Have you changed your diet to see whether you could get rid of the extra weight?  Most women don’t quit because they don’t want those extra pounds, but the extra pounds seem better than the nicotine to me.  Good for you, Gail!
I love Mahi Mahi, and the way I like it best is grilled with a garlic lemon butter sauce.  I am not sure how to tell you to make it but I am sure if you google it, you will find the recipe.  Take care and have a happy Valentine’s Day!  Blessings my friend.

  10. Congrats on the one year. I am so glad I never smoked… I hear it’s so hard to quit… but you did it… thats so great. I tell my kids dieting is bad for you, you must eat healthy and get exercise, they are quite young so hopefully it will get lodged in their heads. Especially for my daughter, there are way to many pressures out there for young girls these days, so hopefully what she’s been told now, at 7, will stick in her head for good. Haha, I am the same way with beer! Oh man, it started snowing this morning and hasn’t stopped yet… I volunteered to give a friend a ride home when she gets here by bus. Hmmm… hope it stops soon. I can do it, but I don’t like winter driving.. AT ALL!! Hope you have a Happy Valentines Day.. take care.
Oh, I was here the other day, but didn’t have time to comment, sick daughter, and I read your post about your G-ma… sounds like she was a wonderful woman.

  11. I’ve heard lots of different granny names, but I’ve not heard Nonna. I was wondering where that came from. The Princess came up with Mammie on her own. I was going to go with Grammy because all the other good names were taken, so it’s a contraction of Momma and Grammy. I get a lot of strange looks in the store and I know I’ll never find a coffee mug that says "I Love Mammie", but I like it. Her other grandmother insisted on Nana and Nana’s sister insisted on MiMi. That side of the family all have nicknames like Baw-Baw, Me-Maw and She-She.
I grew up with a nickname, nobody ever called me Dana until I was in my 30’s. I am still Sue or Suzie as far as family goes.
Congrats on the anniversary. I know how hard it is. I quit in 1985 for 5 years, then took it back up due to stress – that was the year I inherited my 20 year old sister.   Then again, I quit in 1998 and took it back up when we lost the granddaughter (I’ll blog about that someday, maybe).
I quit for the last time in 2001 and after my allergy thingy last summer, I know I won’t be starting again. I experienced severe bronchial spasms and I got a glimpse of what it’s like to have an extreme lung dysfuntion like cancer or COPD. I was horrible. No way is that gonna happen again!!!
Ok, I’ll close this mini-blog now. Stay warm…

  13. Hi, Gail~ just checking in to see how you all were weathering the storms & wish you a belated Happy Valentine’s Day.
Quite a varied post of information 🙂 That is some seriously big seafood, & that is probably more beer then I will ever drink in my entire life! Congrats on one year of freedom from smokes- I wish my MIL would take your lead :-/
I think I will "borrow" your Grandmother moniker for myself; being a young mother, with living mothers & grandmother, I’ve been wondering what my potential grandchildren would call me- NO I’m not making any announcements!- but I now the time is coming soon, 5 years if I’m lucky.

  14. Hello Gail… thanks for asking… both kids have recovered nicely and are back to being their mischievous selves, and I’m so happy about that 😉 And just in time too, their baby cousin is coming for the weekend, we do NOT want to make him sick. Take care, -S-

  15. Hi Gail.
I dont sleep in , I cant.  I am a hyper person.. with that kind of personality so when my eyes open I am up. Bob still tells me to sleep but I cant . I used to like drak cloudy rainy days . but not anymore.
    She may get over it.
We have 2 new babies. I am hoping to get a photo of one. One mother is crazy and really hates me so she is dangerous and I cant go near her. We dont have that happen very often, but it does happen. She could kill. She has charged a few times so I wont go near her, I am scared of her now.
I can walk among the herd Bulls that are big really big and not be afaid but of her noway.
she is nuts, and when she leaves here I will ge gald , I think.
    Have a great day Gail

  16. WAY TO GO GAIL!!!! Having lost dad to a massive heart attack one year ago on Pres. Day. I can thank you on behalf of your dd and little Bells for  making this decision. Dad was a healthy guy aside from that habit with very good heart genes so the docs blame the heart attack pretty much solely on the cigs.  He was 54.  So again and with emphatic noise WAY TO GO GAIL!!!
Cool bits of trivia.  I’m trying to imagine a 6ft lobster.  I think I’ve stumbled onto a children’s book idea. Or a horror movie??!! 🙂 And can you imagine all that beer? No wonder so many signed up to be sailors. No nagging wife a room full of beer just for you?!  Man heaven 🙂
Can’t wait to hear about Bells calling you Nonna. My sis is considering the same thing. What special moniker can she give each grandparent to give them distinction.  What a cool thing. It makes it special and your own little private thing.  This child is blessed indeed. I’d love to hear more about how she came into your life. You eluded to it being non traditional – as my own first pregancy was. But I don’t want to pry – just an invite if you ever want to share.
    Happy Hearts Day!!

  17. i am still trying to quit…oh and the pictures are up now…
:o) smiles easy to give away they are free… :o) very contagious… :o) so pass one to anyone … :o) to people that you love… :o) and even to those you don’t… :o) in no time the whole world will be smiling :o)

  18. Congratulations!  One year without smokes!  People always ask how I did it.  I just put them down and stopped smoking them ~grins~.  And I sure as hell didn’t succeed my first three or four times ~smiles~.
    I love Mahi Mahi.  Yummy!

  19. good for you on the no smoking Gail …himself stopped for over 18 years & then started again a few years back but stopped the weekend Fergus was born & hasn’t smoked since ..he says thet it takes a lot of will power not to have one so you are good not to give in to the temptation .
I hope you are ready for the snow ,maybe you will just get a dusting like we had ..I am hoping that we give it a miss this year now as I will be afraid to drive in it 😦
we are a funny lot in trying to chose what our babies will call us :-)Fergus says ‘Ahmma ‘mostly to me but it is sounding more like  ‘grandma’  that I chose …lol..he says ‘rahdad’ for grandad . I reckon he will soon get the g’s on the front of the words . He tends to copy any new word he hears just now so we have to take care what we say when he is around  .His favourite words this week are  ‘more ‘ and ‘play’ which he says very clearly & loudly ….. we have such beautiful & clever babies Gail ,and very active ones too , thank God that they are strong and healthy
enjoy the weekend ,hugs for you & beautiful Bells from Fergus & me
    love and blessings

    Hey Gail!!!
Congrats on quitting smoking! My hat is off to you. That is quite the accomplishment!
I’m glad you’re doing well Gail… I miss our chats. I hope to be able to speak with you soon.
    Love ya,

  21. ya i don’t think i would want to be called grandma either…or granny…maybe nana…
:o) smiles easy to give away they are free… :o) very contagious… :o) so pass one to anyone … :o) to people that you love… :o) and even to those you don’t… :o) in no time the whole world will be smiling :o)

  22. Wow… what a bunch of interesting little tidbits!!!
AND most definitely congratulations on beating your smoking habit. It’s a drag… ;-S
I think I’ve been on a diet my entire life, except when I was expecting, then it was a free for all. I ate everything.
Well, hope you have a wonderful weekend, G~
    Hugs, Lori

  23. Hi Gail,
I know I don’t stop by much at all, but I do read your comments at my BFF’s site.  You left one yesterday that continues to move me.  Every time I read it, I get all faclempt.
"It is so good to see a man gentle enough for a baby and strong enough to protect our country"
That statment is soooooooo true.  Thanks for keeping life in perspective.
    Tammy <><

  24. Mahi Mahi is great broiled & then served with good hollandaise sauce.  Don’t allow it to get freezer burn…send it to me!!  Grinning…..hey, congrats on the no smoking thing.  Perhaps you could offer me a tip on how to dismiss this nasty vice.  I’m open for all suggestions.
    J. Wesley
p.s. I’m gonna have to visit Nooner.  He sounds like a really good man with a loyal following.  Alas, it does take all kinds!  Have a great time in your new smoke free environment.

  25. Yesterday Em’s was napping on my chest and her little head happened to bob over to some skin and she intantly started rooting around for a snack.  She was sucking all over my chest, I was cracking up.  It was like "SKIN!!!  FOOD!!!"
Which email do you use the most?  I have a couple of different ones in my address book for you and I want to send you the CUTEST picture ever.  If you email me, I will send it to you.

  26. Ciao G.
Thanks for visiting and also for your sweet comment. I love to see you stop in..
Hope that you are having a great weekend.
Wow, one year Ann. way to go Gail. That is great on you….I am not a smoker, but they tell me that is the hardest thing to do, but I am sure that the results of it are rewarding in itself.
    God Bless You
