Surprise!

A couple of months ago, I called my sister and asked what we were going to do for our father’s 75th birthday.  You see, the men on my father’s side don’t tend to live past their 60’s so this was a big deal.  My sis, also a G, came up with a plan and it went like this:

My parents live in the southern part of the state.  Baby brother, J, and his wife arrived from the left coast of the country Thursday night and surprised our dad on Friday.  Cool.  My sister, my "adopted sister" C, brother C and I all live in different areas.  So, we decided to meet at a spot near our parents’ house and all roll in at the same time.  We went up to their door, rang the bell and walked in saying happy birthday while carrying balloons, food and decorations!  Dad was so shocked!  We got him good!

It really turned out well.  The catering was from my favorite Cafe (seared salmon medallions with wasabi cream sauce and grilled breast of chicken with roasted shallot in a wild mushroom sauce) and there was an array of desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth.  Biscotti, pastries, Key Lime Pie, sesame and pignoli cookies (are you seeing an ethnic theme here??), cakes, fresh fruit………..oh, my!  It was great!

I hadn’t seen my baby bro for about five years and it felt so good to squeeze him tight!  He called me today to let me know that he feels the same.  It is so great that my family and I often tell each other, "Love you."  We don’t leave it unsaid and that leaves us with no regrets.  The future is uncertain so say what you need to say today.

It was a good day.

  1. Awwww, that was very very sweet of you all.  Memories like that will be treasured forever, and that’s the best part about it all.  We have no guarantees for tomorrow so sharing such memories whenever we can is priceless!

  2. Hey G, how have you been? I’ve been busy, now having a few free moments before I get busy. 5. What a wonderful surprise and how blessed is he to have some pretty terrific kids!! (And the food sounded delish!)  Sounds like a really great reunion of those you love.

Thanks for the kind comment about Em 🙂   As for California Adventure – it is a lot more laid back than Disneyland – it has probably half the rides and some pretty fun attractions.  My favorite is Soarin Over California which takes you on a virtual "hang glider" ride through various parts of California.  We LOVE the Indy Jones ride – it is very rough though.  The best part is the boulder coming at you and the car drops down into the dark before the boulder hits!

I hope you have a great week!

  6. Hello Gail,

Now that is THE way to throw a party! Catching the guest of honor of guard is so much fun. Teh having great food, balloons, but I’ll bet no peanut fights;) Someday my grandsons will grow up and then the fun decreases.

The bad guys can’t get me down. They leave comments which are mere descriptions of themselves.

    Peace & Blessings.

  7. Hi G~

Gosh! I haven’t eaten yet today and reading all that yummy sounding food just made my stomach growl!!! LOL. You sound like a chef writing that menu out for us! Man, I’m hungry.

It sounds like a wonderful and blessed time for you and your immediate family! How lovely.

I am staying warm, I like it cold anyway…I’m a big norther girl. LOL

  8. Five years without seeing your sibling, wow, that is a long time!  I have a hard time with seeing mine once a year.  It’s nice that you all know the value of I Love you’s!  I wish it were that way in my family.  It’s always so uncomfortable, the L word!

Happy Birthday Dad!  How exciting for him!

    Take care,
    Amy

  9. What a lovely gift for each of you! The dinner sounded awesome- I wouldn’t say "No" to any leftovers 🙂 particularly since I have to actually do some cooking while Chris is away (he left for FL again last night :P)

  10. i love surprises!!
:o) smiles easy to give away they are free… :o) very contagious… :o) so pass one to anyone … :o) to people that you love… :o) and even to those you don’t… :o) in no time the whole world will be smiling :o)

  11. Yeah I love family.  We are starting on the new generations, and like you most the men don’t make it past 60-65 here.  Most of my relatives are spread across the country, but I always enjoy seeing them.  Well the ones that aren’t rich ~chuckles~.  I don’t really like my rich relatives they are a bunch of liars and chameleons, but I have plenty of great famly that I do love.  Luckily my mom and dad own a summer house in Spokane so I get to see them every year for several months.  My brother Jeff lives in the house with them, although there have been times I haven’t seen my brother for 5 years and we only live across town ~chuckles~.

I am so glad you had a good time and got to see those you love ~cheers~.

    Love,
    Adam

  12. Chris is in the motorhome rental business; his company has sites all over the country, as well as contracts w/ NASCAR & Universal Studios (they provide movie trailers also). He is their lead technician & probably the hardest working man you will ever meet, so when there is an overload or crisis, he gets to be Mighty Mouse (here he comes to save the day!) The only drawback is having to live in a left-over trailer (usually in need of work :P) on the lot or at the race track for the duration- those beds are not very comfy 😦  The upside of going to FL (besides the extra pay & getting our bed to myself) is he gets to hang out with our oldest son, Robb, who lives about 40 miles away.

  13. You are so lucky to have a family that can get it all together for a big surprise like that! I come from a gathering-challenged family.  I would l I hope your dad was thrilled!
Mmm, dang am I hungry now.

  14. Wow, I can imagine your dad was surprised… how wonderful, sound like a great time was had by all. Oh I have a baby brother too… I fortunately get to see him more often than that. But still miss him a lot. Hope you’re having a great Thursday… -S-

  15. Hey G, just stopping by to say hello.  Hope your week has been a good one…………please stay warm. Hugs.

  16. Hi Gail, they are only half rimless.. lol, is there such a thing? They have no bottom rim on them. I think that is so great that they were smiling for days, what a great time and now great memory they have. -S-

  17. Goood night G~

    ~ Good morning, G!

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND BLESSED DAY.

Yes… insomnia, and listening to music. Man, what a life!

    Later, honey bunny!

  18. Wow~nothing like a big loving family to start the month off!! Dad’s a lucky guy. Happy Birthday to him and many more!! The menu sounds wonderful and yummy and it’s only 8AM here…usually salmon is not one of my yummo foods. Once in a while is ok, though.
I would love to have a large family, (I think) all that’s left of the original people are me and my two sisters. One lives in NM and is chronically ill, so I never see her unless I visit her and of course, I have Chelle just a few minutes away.

Again, what a lucky gal you are….
    Thanks for the joke!!
    xoxo
    Dana

  19. My friend is doing okay…….very good spirits.  The doctors took off the left breast along with 25 lymph nodes.  She is strong in the Lord and we are all trusting in Him.

  20. How great to see your brother after so many years.  I can’t imagine that!!!  I know I said I would send you a picture and somewhere in my befuddled brain, I cannot recall if I actually did so or not……..brain fog.

    I miss my babies…:(

  24. Hello Gail,

Having a civilized family get-together is such a great thing. More families need to try it. Memories to treasure forever, I hope you got some great pictures of it. Then later they can be reviewed and stories told to younger generations about all that happened.

The last email I got from you was 7 MAR. I finally got around to ansering it today – my bad, I should have done it earlier. The person who is the subject of the missive has been reported. His lies about me are so far out that I would rather eat live goldfish or worms than to believe him.

    Have a great week.

    Peace, Love, & Blessings.

  25. Let me try this again. Hi Gail. Stopped into , sounds like you have been very busy, I have to , thinking of you and wishing you a great week
    Lisa

  26. What a great surprise!  I think that was awesome.  My Dad was 76 when he went to be with the Lord.  You never know what tomorrow brings.  I’m glad you had that opportunity.  I’m also so glad you are close to your family.  This summer will be 2 years since I’ve spoken to one of my brothers.  But hey he has a phone too and I have lived here for just over 3 years and NONE of my family has came to visit.  But I will stop.  Family was always so important to me.  It takes more than one person though to make it work.  I hope you have a wonderful week.  It is warming up here and will be 68 tomorrow.

  27. Hi G ~

I too am eccstatic that the "box" was cleaner prior to me being in there with my head.

YUCK… especially if there had been a fresh, squishy one in there…

    OH MY…

    Have a great week, G~

    Love, Lori

  28. Yes, she is funny and the most excellent writer.  I am planning to get to the old stuff as soon as I can.
    Have a happy Tuesday!

  29. Hi mama,

Its sweet still you refer your brother ‘baby’. I am sure things went well and you all had good time. Well, I didn’t have good chat with you that day, but I feel sad, I shouldn’t have brought the talk of linux. I guess I have to slow down a little on that.

Miracle!!! I remember J & J’s names (well I have to recite it million times to remember, ha ha ha)….

Give my hugs to my niece.

    Have great day mom.
    God bless you.
    Rhonald.

  30. I know there are different factors as far as the pain goes (where you get it put, how close to a bone, how much fat/muscle you have, etc.) but I found out today it may also have something to do with the artist. I talked to a girl at the gym today who has been to the lady I used as well as another place. She said the guy she went to didn’t hurt her as bad. She said, "oh yeah, that woman, she will HURT you." So I don’t understand what the do different, but maybe that had something to do with it. LOL I already picked one out for my lower back on their designs too. UGH Maybe I will check out the other place first and see what they have to offer. I might find something there I like as well. 🙂
