A couple of months ago, I called my sister and asked what we were going to do for our father’s 75th birthday. You see, the men on my father’s side don’t tend to live past their 60’s so this was a big deal. My sis, also a G, came up with a plan and it went like this:
My parents live in the southern part of the state. Baby brother, J, and his wife arrived from the left coast of the country Thursday night and surprised our dad on Friday. Cool. My sister, my "adopted sister" C, brother C and I all live in different areas. So, we decided to meet at a spot near our parents’ house and all roll in at the same time. We went up to their door, rang the bell and walked in saying happy birthday while carrying balloons, food and decorations! Dad was so shocked! We got him good!
It really turned out well. The catering was from my favorite Cafe (seared salmon medallions with wasabi cream sauce and grilled breast of chicken with roasted shallot in a wild mushroom sauce) and there was an array of desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth. Biscotti, pastries, Key Lime Pie, sesame and pignoli cookies (are you seeing an ethnic theme here??), cakes, fresh fruit………..oh, my! It was great!
I hadn’t seen my baby bro for about five years and it felt so good to squeeze him tight! He called me today to let me know that he feels the same. It is so great that my family and I often tell each other, "Love you." We don’t leave it unsaid and that leaves us with no regrets. The future is uncertain so say what you need to say today.
It was a good day.
