This and That

  First, the feast:

Appetizer

When someone smiles at you, do you smile back?  As a rule, yes.

Soup

Describe the flooring in your home.  Do you have carpet, hardwood, vinyl, a mix?  Hardwood floors and ceramic tile in the kitchen and bathroom.  I do not like the ceramic tile.   In the kitchen, I would like to replace it with cork and in the bathroom I’m not sure.  Maybe travertine.

Salad

Write a sentence with only 5 words, but all of the words have to start with the first letter of your first name.  Girlish grins grow genuine glee.  (I’m not a poet Eye-rolling.)

Main Course

Do you know anyone whose life has been touched by adoption?  Absolutely.  And the joy that has been brought into their lives is beyond description.  A very special mother’s day to the women who unselfishly put their children up for adoption instead of seeking alternatives.

Dessert

Name two positive things your mother, or a mother-like person in your life, taught you:  Random acts of kindness and honesty.

Life has been a whirlwind lately.  A clear calendar doesn’t mean a thing around here.  I thought I didn’t have any plans and God sad, "Ha!"An example would be Tuesday.  Himself and I visited three people in our local hospital.  Yes, three.  I was going to write about them but will save that for another day.

It is very important for adults to go to a dermatologist for a full body skin cancer screening at least once a year.  Himself needs to go twice a year and recently had some pre-cancerous cells removed from his ears (common in men).  He needs to wear a hat year round now to protect his face, scalp and ears from the sun (his forehead has grown larger over the years Wink).  There are few men I know of who like to shop.  Well, Himself is no exception.  However, we have been to store after store to find just the right hat for the summer.  Gripe, gripe, gripe.  "I look so old in a hat."  ~heavy sigh~  We still haven’t found one but at least he is using the sunscreen.  Maybe I will make him wear a bandana  because I don’t want to waste any  more gas on his vanity!

Trying to find a new breakfast place since the Cafe closed has been very disappointing.  The "feel" of the place just isn’t anywhere else.  Besides, where else can you get fresh fruit instead of potatoes with your eggs?  However, we do have an IHOP (International House of Pancakes) which serves grits.  You just don’t get grits all that much this side of the Mason-Dixon line!

Now that the weather is warmer we have spent more time outside with Bells.   Ugh!  There is a reason to have children when you are younger.  Isabella is very active girl and keeping up with her is a challenge.  Two days a week is enough.

I have been reading up on ways to deal with Isabellas sensory processiong disorder.  It has helped me to understand how she ticks and to know how to work with her behavior.  It’s good stuff.

Prince Caspian is opening in American movie theaters on May 16th.  This is the second of seven books of the Chronicles of Narnia written by C.S. Lewis.  The first one was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  I would highly suggest renting the first movie and then see the second.  Actually, I would recommend reading the books.  Time very well spent.

I’ll end with a worthwhile quote from Mr. Lewis:  "I sometimes wonder whether all pleasures are not substitutes for joy."  It got me thinking.

I hope you have a wnderful, safe weekend.   Blessings, gail

  1. We can’t wait to see Prince Caspian. All of my girls read the entire Narnia series.
Hubby wears hats. In fact this year he started wearing a cap, not a baseball cap but one that would look right at home on top of Prince Phillip’s head. Hubby looks so distinguished in hats. Try that line on Himself.
    Let’s feast:
    Smile back at folks? Yes.
Flooring in home? Pine wood floor throughout (even kitchen), tile in bathrooms, cheapo vinyl flooring in laundry room
5 word sentence? Surely sometimes she sounds serious.
Touched by adoption? Yes, I know several people. Their lives seem very happy and full.
Mother’s lessons? How to be supportive of a person even if you totally disagree with their choices; and, How to convince a man to do exactly what you want while believing that it was HIS idea in the first place.

  2. My Dad for years wore a baseball cap which protected the top of his head but not his ears.  He burnt them to a crisp many times and has had a few spots of skin cancer removed.  Now he understands that he needs a hat that protects his head, face, neck and ears so he went and got himself a Tilley and he loves it!

Appetizer – When someone smiles at you, do you smile back? of course. I even wave back to people that wave on TV.
Soup – Describe the flooring in your home. Do you have carpet, hardwood, vinyl, a mix? laminate with carpet in the bedrooms
Salad – Write a sentence with only 5 words, but all of the words have to start with the first letter of your first name. Lads love Linda’s long legs
Main Course – Do you know anyone whose life has been touched by adoption? I know people that have put a child up for adoption and I know people that were adopted.
Dessert – Name two positive things your mother, or a mother-like person in your life, taught you: courage and perseverance

  3. Just cried my way through the first movie last weekend (have watched it about 4 times) so I’m ready to see Prince Caspian.
Smile back?  If she’s a pretty, thirtysomething, the Queen would skin me alive!
Flooring?  Ripped out the carpet several years ago and refinished the old hardwood floors myself.  Absolutely love the ceramic tile in kitchen, den and bathrooms.
Five word sentence: All ants ain’t all aunts.
    Big boys buy bass boats.
    Crispy cooked cats can’t cry.
    Should stop saying stupid stuff.
Touched by adoption?  I know quite a number of folks.
Name two positive things from mom: value truth and keep learning.

  4. Tell himself I have a friend who has of 40 melanomas removed from his ears, face, and forearms….if that don’t work, tell him our delicious he would look in a Indiana Jones hat!!  We know how you feel, the older we get the more visits to the hospital we make.  I often wonder how many would rather not have a bunch of visitors, but that is a difficult question to pose to someone sick enough to be hospitalized…sigh.
Glue less Pergo floors in the dining room and hall, a new really good vinyl type flooring in the full den downstairs, and Berber carpeting in the bedrooms.  Ceramic tile in the kitchen and we hate it….hard to keep the grout clean.
    Jump jock Johnny’s jumping jacks.
Know many who have have been blessed and are being blessed by adoption.
My mother taught me that I can’t fool my mother and how to have good penmanship.
Mostly, I consider Isabella a very lucky child to have so much love in her life.  Good luck with the hat hunt….perhaps you could give him a crock pot to wear on his noggin!

  5. First of all, Happy Mother’s Day to you Gail. 🙂 Wishing you a lovely fabulous day. 🙂
Over here it’s almost bed time. WE had a mother’s day dinner..and was also at the Old Folks home for my monthly visit. Well, since it was mother’s day, we had a woman speaker at church, touching particularly on the topic of Special Children. A mother came up to give testimony of how she only discovered her son had severe ADHD  when he was 8. BEfore that, she metted out all sorts of punishments and stuff thinking her child was just too naughty. However, her son now 13 is on the road to recovery…and one thing she said "I had wished I’d discovered he was ADHD much earlier. It would have helped so much. But then, the Lord reminded me, that with a Mighty God like Him, there’s no such thing  as too late, for nothing is impossible with Him." That was powerful to me… for she suffered so much guilt till the Lord reminded her that, with God, there’s no such thing as too late. Her son is coping very find now in a Home Schooling program. And she is now in a group supporting other mothers who are going through it. So….just thought I’d share that with you G.
